Most people who head out for a hike aren't seeking the most treacherous hike in America - which happens to be right here in Arizona. Nor are they in search of an effortless and leisurely stroll with little to no natural wonders at which to gawk. That leaves trails that are both beautiful and a bit challenging. Devil's Bridge Trail Arizona fits neatly into that category. Take a look:
Hike the Devil's Bridge Trail, a 1.8-mile adventure with an unusual feature for the payoff: a natural sandstone bridge (the largest in the area) upon which, if you're up for the challenge of getting UP there, you can pose for the best photo of your life.
Another reward for your bravery in making the climb to the top of that archway is unparalleled views of the Coconino National Forest.
But getting to the top of Devil's Bridge will test your resolve in more ways than one. So, how challenging is the Devil's Bridge Trail?
Although the elevation gain on the entire trail is only 400 feet, the trail itself has a couple of challenges of another sort. However, it's one of the most beautiful trails in Arizona and absolutely worth the effort.
Once you hit the trailhead, which was originally built for jeep travel, you'll begin to think it's a piece of cake.
Admire the scenery along this first part of the trail because things are about to change rather quickly. Take in the sights of the juniper, prickly pear cactus, and the other flora while you can.
Because at approximately the 0.75-mile mark your focus will change dramatically. The breathtaking Devil's Bridge, is anything but devilish... you could even consider it to be a bit of Heaven. Take a long, admiring look and then get ready to climb — and climb some more.
The natural stairs lead to two different levels. Once you reach the first level, you can make the 64-million-dollar decision: are you brave enough to go to the top and walk across Devil's Bridge?! If so, then carry on!
The payout is amazing, and even if this trail ended up testing your resolve in a few ways... you're sure to feel it was totally worth it.
As someone who has done this hike, and with a child in tow, it was challenging. And if you want that Instagram-worthy photo from the top of the bridge, I wouldn't advise it if you're afraid of heights.

You may be wondering the best time to hike the Devil's Bridge Trail. When I went, it was during early spring and the weather was perfect. I wouldn't advise this hike in the summer months. October through May are most likely the best times of the year for this trail.
Devil's Bridge Trail Arizona is located 12 miles west of Sedona. The trailhead is located off of Dry Creek Road and is open year-round. Getting there requires a high-clearance vehicle due to the rough road. An alternate route for lower vehicles can be found U.S. Forest Service website. Get more information, including turn-by-turn directions, on the official website of Coconino National Forest.
