A lot of Arizona hikes can be intimidating (we're looking at you, Grand Canyon), but that certainly doesn't always have to be the case. Easy hikes suitable for all ages and skill levels abound in our state—it's just a matter of finding them. Here are the seven highest-rated beginner-friendly trails in Arizona that are ideal if you're new to hiking, have young children, or simply need a break from intense movement.
1. Fay Canyon Trail (Sedona)
Hiking this popular trail is like stepping into the pages of a fairytale. It's nestled in the heart of Red Rock Country, and at a mere 2.6 miles long, it's suitable for all ages and skill levels. You can practically see all of Sedona, with evergreen pines and lofty canyons stretching infinitely into the distance. There is a more advanced climb if you keep going past the "end of trail" sign, but it certainly isn't required. For more information, click here.
2. Horseshoe Bend Trail (Page)
Many people are surprised to learn that experiencing one of Arizona's most iconic natural wonders doesn't take much effort. The 1.4-mile "hike" to the overlook is really more of a gentle stroll, and it's wheelchair/stroller accessible. Pro-tip: visit at sunrise or sunset for the most breathtaking view! Parking is $10, and the fee to enter Glen Canyon National Recreation Area varies based on whether you're on foot, bike, motorcycle, or in a vehicle. For more information, click here.
3. Seven Sacred Pools via Soldier Pass Trail (Sedona)
A lesser-known Sedona hike, Seven Sacred Pools is just a mile long and packed with jaw-dropping sights at every turn. Between a sinkhole, a cave, and the trail's namesake—seven pristine natural pools that reflect the stunning red rock landscape—it's an adventure that just keeps on giving. You'll find more information here.
4. Teacup Trail to Coffeepot Rock (Sedona)
Sedona may as well be crowned the outdoor capital of Arizona, because Teacup Trail to Coffeepot Rock, another top-rated Arizona hike, is also located here. You'll only need to allot hour or so for this 2.4-mile loop, and it's both kid and dog-friendly. Desert flora abounds everywhere you look, and the trail culminates with unparalleled views of Coffeepot Rock—can't you see the resemblance? Click here for more information.
5. Sugarloaf Loop Trail (Sedona)
Sugarloaf Loop Trail is right near Coffeepot Rock, so feel free to combine the two if you're craving a longer hike. This one is just under two miles and features a very gradual elevation gain. Despite such a low-key ascent, the 360-degree views from the summit are unbelievable! For more information, click here.
6. White Tank Waterfall Trail (Waddell)
Waterfall hikes don't have to be difficult or take a full day. Nestled in White Tank Mountain Regional Park, this 1.9-mile, out-and-back trail features ancient petroglyphs and ends at a gorgeous waterfall. The water only flows after it rains, so time your visit accordingly! The park entrance fee is $7 (or $2 if you enter on foot, hike, or horseback.) For more information, click here.
7. Fossil Creek Waterfall (Pine)
A lush, tropical oasis awaits on this 2.6-mile trail near Pine. Beautiful scenery abounds, from moss-covered rocks to this awe-inspiring waterfall that cascades into a crystal-clear reservoir. The water is often chilly, but that doesn't stop anyone from jumping right in! For more information, click here.
Please note: As of October 2020, the road leading from Strawberry to the trailhead is closed indefinitely. You'll have to drive from Camp Verde, and a high-clearance vehicle is required.
