Mineral baths have been used for millennia as a way to relieve stress, recover from sickness, and just simply relax. One interesting evolution of bathing in mineral waters is a recent trend in salt caves.
Also known as halotherapy (coming from the Greek word for salt, halos), focuses on using a salty environment to help people relax and even treat ailments like asthma. This usually happens in naturally occurring salt caves in Europe and Asia, where you sit in a room for a designated amount of time to be exposed to the mineral-rich, salt-laden air.
While the treatment has been met with some skepticism from the medical community, you have to admit that it’s a pretty unique way to promote wellness and relaxation. Arizona has a few located around the state but here’s one we thought was pretty unique.
Salt Chalet Arizona is a small spa that sits in a quiet Scottsdale neighborhood just off of Chapparal Road.
Walking inside, it look like any ordinary spa, with a peaceful atmosphere and small rooms that lead off to other therapies offered here. Walk down the hallway and you'll find a sign above a doorway stating "Dead Sea Salt Rooms."
That's where you'll find this.
The two quiet rooms are coated in salt from the Dead Sea, which are rich in minerals like magnesium and potassium, and have been used for centuries for healing the body. Halotherapists claim that breathing in the salt-laden air assists breathing by reducing lung inflammation and mucus in the lungs, which is why they recommend it for respiratory conditions. The salt rooms also use color therapy.
It's a nice, quiet environment that promotes relaxation and deep breathing exercises.
Even if you're skeptical of halotherapy, just getting the chance to set aside time to sit back and relax is what a lot of people love about engaging in this type of therapy.
In addition to the salt room, you can also purchase your own Himalayan salt lamp so you can enjoy some of the same benefits at home.
Wow, that looked pretty cool! Salt Chalet Arizona is located at 5011 North Granite Reef Road in Scottsdale. You can visit their website or Facebook page for details about their hours or to schedule a treatment.
