If you’re looking for a little adventure, then you need to hike this woodland trail in Alaska all the way to these original WWII bunker ruins. Located on Caines Head, in Seward, Alaska, this beautiful hike heads through a woodland forest before hugging the coastline and bringing you to the ruins. This is one amazing hike you’ll want on your bucket list!
There’s an epic trail right outside the town of Seward, Alaska that you’ll want to hike if you love World War II history.
Beginning on Lowell Point, this fun hike starts off relatively easy through a wooded forest. You’ll ascend down the mountainside and to the beaches to begin the trek out to Caines Head State Recreation Area.

There are beautiful views along the way, and you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy them, because the hike is a good 14 miles long, out and back.
There’s significant elevation gain throughout the trail, but it is all spread out, so it’s not too strenuous in any one area. The entire elevation gain is 4,796 ft.
The trickiest part of this hike is timing it with the tides.
Begin the trail at least two hours before a +3 tide to avoid becoming stranded along the way. The three-mile stretch of beach between Tonsina Point and North Beach can be hiked only during a tide of +3 or lower. Keep your eye on the clock!
The hike takes you all the way out to the ruins of Fort McGilvray.
The fort was located on the top of Caines Head, on a cliff 650 feet above Resurrection Bay. This fort was built by the United States Army during World War II to defend Seward against a possible Japanese invasion.

The fort and trails in the Caines Head Recreation Area are open to explore, but remember to bring a flashlight.
You can explore a maze of underground passages and rooms, and even head to the steel firing platforms of the two six-inch guns that once sat ready to defend the Port of Seward. Make sure to stay on the concrete pads and trails, because the cliffs in the area can be dangerous.
If you don’t think you can complete the 14-mile hike, there are a couple of companies that offer a kayak excursion out to the bunkers.
They offer full-day kayaking trips where you’ll enjoy the opportunity to explore Caines Head State Park Recreation area. And while you’re kayaking, you may even see a whale or two along your journey through Resurrection Bay.

We have plenty of iconic hiking trails here in Alaska. Many visitors to Alaska jump at the opportunity to hike the trail to Exit Glacier and Thunderbird Falls trail, and both of those trails are wonderful. For folks on the Juneau side, there’s one iconic trail in Alaska that everyone should hike at least once in their lifetime, and it’s one of my favorites. Let’s check it out:
Nugget Falls Trail is a two-mile out-and-back trail that begins from the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center. I’d recommend carving out some time to visit the Visitor Center so you can learn about the area—it’s truly fascinating! If you plan on accessing nearby attractions like Photo Point and Steep Creek Trails, you’ll need to pick up a day pass. Fees are not necessary for hiking the Nugget Falls Trail.
After checking out the Visitor Center, it’s time to hit the trail. Thankfully, this is one of the easier hikes in Alaska. You won’t be scrambling over anything or gaining thousands of feet in elevation. It’s actually pretty stroller-friendly and wheelchair accessible.
The trail is a mix of gravel and paved with an average width of six feet. Since it’s a fairly easy hike, this is a great kid-friendly trail that the entire family can enjoy. Dogs are welcome to join in on the fun, just keep them on a leash.
This iconic trail in Alaska can be pretty popular on the weekends. If you want to beat the crowds, I’d suggest hiking this trail early in the morning or on a weekday. You might even find yourself the only one on the trail! Love when that happens.
The views of the Mendenhall Glacier are iconic. Glacier views and Alaska go together like peanut butter and jelly, and this view doesn’t disappoint!
You can get pretty close to Nugget Falls, so be sure to wear some waterproof gear and a pair of solid hiking boots. This impressive waterfall plunges down about 377 feet into Mendenhall Lake, and it’s just stunning on a beautiful day.
Hang out here for as long as you’d like. It’s a popular spot for birdwatching, so keep your eyes on the skies, and you might catch a glimpse of a bald eagle or two.
Overall, this trail would take you under an hour to complete, which gives you ample time for more adventures in Juneau. If you’re a sucker for a good view like I am, this scenic chalet in Juneau might become your new favorite place to stay in Alaska.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L.
