If you’re looking for a hike with a little bit of history attached, there is an amazing railway hike in Palmer, Alaska that fits the bill! Take the day and stroll along the banks of the Matanuska River on an abandoned railroad track. And keep your eyes peeled for old railroad cars and tracks left behind!
This abandoned railroad runs between Palmer and Moose Creek.
This cool route has now been turned into a hike measuring in at approximately six miles each way. So you can either hike out and back or park a car at each end and just hike one way.
Not only will you get a fabulous workout and plenty of gorgeous views, you’ll run across some history.
The trail follows an old abandoned railroad track. There are even old train cars on the side of the trail for you to see. Many portions of the trail have the old railroad tracks exposed, so watch your step.
The trail is considered a moderately difficult hike.
Coming from Palmer, the first half of the trail is relatively flat. It passes through forested areas of cottonwood, birch, and spruce. If you’re looking for an easy walk, this section is great to do before turning around!
You’ll then reach some areas with rock slides and scree.
This may be a scramble to get up and over, so it’s not recommended for very young children or anyone physically challenged. If you can make it through, the other side will wow you with some views!
The entire elevation gain is about 1,700 feet, and filled with beautiful views.
Many people hike, ride their horses, or even mountain bike this trail. You may even be passed by some trail runners getting a workout in!
The hike is even popular in the wintertime.
You’ll find cross country skiers out here enjoying the solitude. There are also plenty of people who snowshoe this gorgeous trail. Or throw on some crampons and hike it if the snow isn’t too deep!

You can enter the trail at one of two points! You can park along Eagle Avenue in Palmer. Or, you can park at the northern trailhead off of the Glenn Highway at Moose Creek. The trailhead is across the street. Follow the short trail that runs along the nearby creek to find the trailhead!
