Lazy Mountain Trail is a moderately difficult trail that runs from the base of the mountain up to an amazing 360 view of the valley. There are two trails, so take the Lazy Moose for a gentler route and more switchbacks up the mountain.
In Spring, the trail can be a little muddy and slippery, so make sure to wear sturdy shoes. Once it is fully summer, the trail can be dry and dusty, so be sure to remember your own water and a bandana.
The trail is 4 miles up and back and has an elevation of about 3000 feet. At the top you will see an incredible 360 view of the Matanuska Valley and soak in the beauty of this wild place.
The beginning of the hike heads through some somewhat dense foliage. The forest is colorful and full of songbirds that will sing you along the beginning of your hike.
The trail is best used for hiking and trail running from May to October, and wildflowers abound during the summer months. The full hike takes between 3.5-5 hours, so plan a full day in the mountains.
Bring your furry friends since doggies are allowed to use the path, too. Keep your buddy close to not inconvenience other hikers.
About a third of the way up, there is a bench to take a rest and enjoy the view. The trail flattens out a little after this point and becomes a little easier before the push to the top.
The hike is intense with steep sections, but the pay off is worht the effort. The strenuous hike will be worth it when you arrive at the top and get to take in the incredible views of the valley.
It can be chilly or rainy at the top, so bring layers any time of year. You can see Bodenburg Butte, Pioneer Peak and the Twin Peaks to complete the epic 360 degree view of the valley.
There are also an abundance of wild blueberries in high summer, so bring a container to stop and pick some. Any time this summer, you will love this amazing hike to a great view near Palmer.
