This easy trail is dotted with all sorts of gorgeous plant life all spring and summer long! Here's more on why this trail is one of the best wildflower hikes in Alaska.
Dock Point Trail is a fun little trail that's a huge favorite of locals and tourists alike.
Sitting in a quieter section of waterfront Valdez, it boasts incredible views from the east or west. Its a shorter one mile hike, with about one hundred feet of elevation gain.
The trailhead is located to the left of a lovely little beach next to the harbor.
There's plenty of parking, and the route is visible from the parking lot. The entrance to the trail offers views of the mountains above the Richardson Highway.
Most of the elevation gain is in the beginning of the trail.
You will be ascending through spruce trees and ground dogwood. In the spring, the hike is framed by an arch of green branches.
There are lots of informative placards on the trail, highlighting points of interest along the way.
You'll find out information about everything from the flowers you're looking at, to the animals you should watch out for! There are plenty of moose and bear sightings on the trail, so be mindful of the potential wildlife around you.
The trail is very well maintained, with nicely packed dirt and boardwalks.
There are plenty of viewing sections that are raised on wooden planks. The trail is constructed well and takes into account the larger amount of rainfall Valdez can see.
You can find wildflowers like ground dogwood, and many types of berries.
There are plenty of meadows where you can spot the different colored flowers poking out. See if you can spot the wild celery, or alder! It's a gorgeous area of larger than life Alaskan foliage, growing under the midnight sun.
The views from all over this trail are stunning, and the best part is it's completely accessible all year round!
You too can find the trailhead to this beautiful little trail at Kobuk Drive, Valdez, AK 99686. The parking lot has plenty of room, and you can go beach combing before or after your hike as well! Feel free to use the picnic and barbecue areas on the beach.
