When you think swimming in the summer, Alaska may not be the first place you think of. However, this state has an array of amazing swimming spots! With temperatures that swing from extreme to extreme, having somewhere to cool off in the summertime is a delicious and necessary option. We have a great Alaska swimming hole hike that will bring you to one of the best spots to find some relief from the heat!
The Chugach State Park is almost 500,000 incredible acres of Alaskan wilderness.
With over 50 trails through this park, it's no surprise that you can find the perfect swimming spot. Hiking back into this mountain range is truly a delight for all of the senses!

The South Fork Eagle River Trail is a stunning hike out into the backcountry, ending at the beautiful Eagle and Symphony Lakes.
It's about 11 miles roundtrip of killer views and only moderate elevation gain. Expect a very doable 1,558 feet of ascension during your hike, although there are some more trying areas to climb near the lakes.
The trail has many sights to see, including wildlife and a wide array of vegetation.
Expect some wild blueberries, low bush cranberries, and gorgeous wildflowers. And remember, you're in bear country! Always be prepared with bear spray and a plan in case you come across more than just moose on your hike.
The trail is regularly maintained, with wooden staircases and bridges over the muddy areas.
These boulders aren't the easiest to scramble over, and this will definitely be the hardest part of your hike. Be aware that if you take your dog with you, this will be very difficult for them. Many hikers report bloody paws of the dogs that attempt this part.
Eagle Lake is one of the two lakes you'll find at the end of the trail.
Even if you just pack a picnic and sit on the banks of these lakes, it is still the perfect spot. Spend your time soaking in the incredible mountain views, and take a swim to refresh yourself before the hike back!
All in all, this makes for an incredible summer's day adventure.
You can explore the gorgeous wilderness of Chugach State Park by finding the trailhead at Address: 2098 W River Drive, Eagle River, AK 99577. It's an easy, 30 minute drive north of Anchorage.

We have plenty of iconic hiking trails here in Alaska. Many visitors to Alaska jump at the opportunity to hike the trail to Exit Glacier and Thunderbird Falls trail, and both of those trails are wonderful. For folks on the Juneau side, there’s one iconic trail in Alaska that everyone should hike at least once in their lifetime, and it’s one of my favorites. Let’s check it out:
Nugget Falls Trail is a two-mile out-and-back trail that begins from the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center. I’d recommend carving out some time to visit the Visitor Center so you can learn about the area—it’s truly fascinating! If you plan on accessing nearby attractions like Photo Point and Steep Creek Trails, you’ll need to pick up a day pass. Fees are not necessary for hiking the Nugget Falls Trail.
After checking out the Visitor Center, it’s time to hit the trail. Thankfully, this is one of the easier hikes in Alaska. You won’t be scrambling over anything or gaining thousands of feet in elevation. It’s actually pretty stroller-friendly and wheelchair accessible.
The trail is a mix of gravel and paved with an average width of six feet. Since it’s a fairly easy hike, this is a great kid-friendly trail that the entire family can enjoy. Dogs are welcome to join in on the fun, just keep them on a leash.
This iconic trail in Alaska can be pretty popular on the weekends. If you want to beat the crowds, I’d suggest hiking this trail early in the morning or on a weekday. You might even find yourself the only one on the trail! Love when that happens.
The views of the Mendenhall Glacier are iconic. Glacier views and Alaska go together like peanut butter and jelly, and this view doesn’t disappoint!
You can get pretty close to Nugget Falls, so be sure to wear some waterproof gear and a pair of solid hiking boots. This impressive waterfall plunges down about 377 feet into Mendenhall Lake, and it’s just stunning on a beautiful day.
Hang out here for as long as you’d like. It’s a popular spot for birdwatching, so keep your eyes on the skies, and you might catch a glimpse of a bald eagle or two.
Overall, this trail would take you under an hour to complete, which gives you ample time for more adventures in Juneau. If you’re a sucker for a good view like I am, this scenic chalet in Juneau might become your new favorite place to stay in Alaska.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L.
