Without a doubt, Alabama is a hiker's paradise. There are several types of hiking trails located throughout the state, some of which are easy enough for kids to join in on the fun. One of Alabama's most popular kid-friendly trails, which leads to a beautiful waterfall, is located in Oak Mountain State Park. For more information about this state park and it's most popular kid-friendly trail, read on.
Oak Mountain State Park is located in the city of Pelham. Covering nearly 10,000 acres, it's Alabama's largest state park.
Hiking is one of Oak Mountain State Park's most popular activities. With more than 50 miles of trails, 25 are used by hikers on a daily basis.
The Green Trail, which is best known as the Peavine Falls Trail, is 1.9 miles long. This short trail begins near the park's office and is perfect for all ages, including kids.
Instead of leading directly to Peavine Falls, the Green Trail will take you to the Peavine Falls parking lot. From this point, you'll either take the White Trail or Blue Trail to reach the waterfall.
Once you reach Peavine Falls, you'll see that the hike was well worth it. This spring-fed waterfall, which is approximately 65 feet tall, is breathtaking! Keep in mind, the best time to hike to Peavine Falls is after a heavy rain. If your hike is during a dry spell, you'll only experience a trickle of water instead of the flowing waterfall seen here.
For more information about the Green Trail, aka Peavine Falls Trail, you can view Oak Mountain State Park's website here. You can visit the park at
200 Terrace Dr., Pelham, AL 35124.
