Alabama is home to several cities that offer many great things to see and do. One city, in particular, is Mobile. According to Thrillist, Mobile is one of America's most overlooked small cities (small according to American standards). Mobile is a beautiful city that's located in Mobile County, Alabama (county seat). It was first settled in 1702, many years before Alabama became a state in 1819. This Gulf Coast city is also the state's only saltwater port.
With approximately 191,000 residents, Mobile is Alabama's third largest city. In addition to its residents, this historic city also receives many visitors each year from across the country, and even the world.
Mobile was home to the first ever Mardi Gras celebration in the New World. This historic gathering took place in 1703, and to this day, it continues to be Mobile's most popular event.
Mobile is also home to Alabama's oldest active newspaper, the Press-Register. The Press-Register, which was founded in 1813, is also Alabama's second-most-read newspaper. It has a circulation of more than 94,000 readers Monday through Saturday and more than 111,000 readers on Sunday.
The city of Mobile is home to several historic attractions, including the Oakleigh Historic Complex. Oakleigh, which is the main feature of this complex, is a unique house museum that receives visitors from near and far. Located on 35 acres, this historic home remains one of the most beautiful plantation homes in the South.
Oakleigh is located at 350 Oakleigh Pl., Mobile, AL 36604. Its hours are as follows: Friday, Saturday, and Monday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Another historic attraction is the USS Alabama. This historic battleship served in World War II and receives visitors from all over the world. It's currently on display at Mobile's Battleship Memorial Park.
Battleship Memorial Park is located at 2703 Battleship Pkwy., Mobile, AL 36602. Its hours are as follows: April-September, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (summer hours); October-March, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (winter hours). Except on Christmas Day, Battleship Memorial Park is open every day.
Mobile, Alabama is well known for its delicious cuisine, with the town home to myriad top-notch eateries and long-standing establishments.
