Many beautiful lakes are located in the south, including Lake Martin in Alabama. Interestingly, according to Southern Living, Lake Martin is considered one of the South's greatest lakes. Take a look below to learn why Alabama's Lake Martin has become such a popular gathering spot over the years.
Lake Martin , which covers more than 41,000 acres, is Alabama's largest man-made reservoir. In fact, it's one of the largest man-made lakes in the entire nation.
Formed by the construction of Martin Dam on the Tallapoosa River, beginning in 1923 and ending 3 years later, the creation was then the largest man-made body of water in the world. The Alabama Power Co. uses the dam powerhouse to generate hydroelectric power.
Located in Tallapoosa, Elmore, and Coosa counties, this beautiful lake offers a variety of recreational activities for all ages. From boating and fishing to...
...paddleboarding and water skiing, there's so much fun to be had on Lake Martin in Alabama.
One of Lake Martin's most popular landmarks is Acapulco Rock, located several hundred yards away. It was originally named Chimney Rock for its large shape resembling a chimney.
Before Martin Dam was built, this area was the Tallapoosa River Gorge, with water more than 150 feet deep. Thousands of visitors descend on this spot every year, particularly boaters, to watch the daredevils scale the 60 feet and jump off into the water. Each summer, numerous swimmers and cliff jumpers gather here.
A great place to grab a bite to eat while on Lake Martin is Kowaliga Restaurant . This waterfront restaurant, which opened in 1953, is located in Alexander City and is accessible by both car and boat.
The restaurant serves what's called a southern comfort menu, offering seasonal, local ingredients. For example, the fresh catfish comes directly from Alabama and Mississippi farms. And don't forget to try out the weekly seafood specials.
