Alabama is home to many amazing islands. Some of these islands have inhabitants, while others are situated above water in the middle of a lake or river. Listed below are seven Alabama islands that are worth visiting this summer.
1. Acapulco Rock Island
Without a doubt, Acapulco Rock Island is Lake Martin's most famous landmark. Named for the resemblance of Acapulco Rock in Mexico, Acapulco Rock Island is a popular gathering spot for boaters. The most popular activity at this famous landmark is jumping into Lake Martin from the rock's different levels. With Labor Day just around the corner, be sure to make plans to visit Acapulco Rock Island. It's one of the most fun times to go.
2. Gaillard Island
Gaillard Island, located in Mobile Bay, is an artificially created island and an important site for colonial nesting seabirds and shore birds. Also, ever since they were first discovered in 1983, brown pelicans have been using Gaillard Island as their only nesting site.
3. Ono Island
Ono Island, located in southern Baldwin County, is a barrier island with a length of 5.5 miles. This gorgeous island is home to a single community with more than 700 homes. Ono Island's home prices are among the highest in Baldwin County, with some as high as $6 million. Ono Island is private and gated, which means a visit to this island can only happen two ways: you'll have to be a guest of a resident, or you'll have to rent one of the homes for your next vacation.
4. Dauphin Island
Dauphin Island is located in Mobile County, and its three main attractions are Fort Gaines, Dauphin Island Sea Lab and the 164-acre Audubon Bird Sanctuary. Dauphin Island makes for a great weekend getaway for the entire family.
5. Gravine Island
Turtles found in and around the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta can usually be found nesting on Gravine Island. And even though brush and trees make up the majority of the island, approximately 200 feet of sandy beach is located at the north end. This beach area is a popular hangout spot among boaters.
6. Pinto Island
Pinto Island is located in Mobile and measures .75 miles wide and 1.45 miles long. This Alabama island is dedicated to many different types of industrial uses, especially shipbuilding.
7. Youngs Island
Youngs Island is located at the northern part of beautiful Lake Martin. This popular landmark was once the Young residence (of Young's Ferry). During the early 1990s, the residence caught fire - destroying everything but its foundation. Over the years, Youngs Island has become a popular place for camping.
