Our slice of the South is no stranger to quiet, untapped natural beauty: secret swimming holes, quiet overlooks, hidden springs...It's fair to say that Alabama boasts an abundance of incredible outdoor destinations - its lakes included! Tucked away in East-Central Alabama, Lake Martin is one of the state's most popular lakes for both relaxing and recreation and is often thought to be one of (if not THE) cleanest lakes in the entire state. But did you know it is also the largest man-made lake in Alabama?
Alabama's Lake Martin is a beautiful lake that's located in Tallapoosa, Elmore, and Coosa counties.
The reservoir covers approximately 41,000 acres, and it's one of several man-made lakes in Alabama. But in addition to being the biggest man-made lake in the state, it was also considered to be the largest man-made lake in the world at the time of its construction in 1924. How neat is that?
Lake Martin was formed by the construction of Martin Dam on the Tallapoosa River. Martin Dam was built by Alabama Power. Lots of people believed the lake's presence would provide better and safer weather conditions for fruit and vegetable production.
Thousands of people visit Lake Martin year after year, specifically during the summer months, because of the recreational activities it offers.
From boating and paddle boarding to fishing, swimming, and beach lounging, there's something for all ages.
There are several islands to explore.
The phenomenal views don't hurt either!
Lake Martin is also home to several popular landmarks, including Acapulco Rock. This large rock, which is covered in graffiti, is a gathering spot for swimmers and cliff jumpers.
And finally, for anyone wanting to experience one of Alabama's most magical sunsets, a visit to Lake Martin is an absolute must. Nothing beats a sunset view on this beautiful lake, after all.

If you're outside of East-Central Alabama, another gorgeous lake in AL that's an absolute must-visit is Lake Guntersville, which happens to be the main feature of Lake Guntersville State Park. In fact, the surrounding town of Guntersville is pretty great too! And if you want to stay awhile, there are oodles of lake cabins to choose from so that you never miss a sunset.
