As the seasons change in Montana, it can feel like life goes by so quickly. One moment we’re hiking through remnants of ice and snow in the mountains, the next we’re lazing in the grass under the summer sun. And then, before we know it, it’s fall. As a diehard lover of all things summer, I try to hold onto every moment of warmer temps and outside fun. That’s why I’m always holding my breath for July 4th celebrations. Because, while summer officially begins in June, it always feels so much more real with an annual fireworks display. Every year I start planning where to watch fireworks near me, and today, I’m sharing what I’ve found. Here are some of the best fireworks displays in Montana.

1. Independence Day Fireworks, Bozeman

This free show takes place at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds and is certain to be one of the best in the state. While the location is different than last year, moving back to the fairgrounds will allow for more parking with an easier way to get in and leave following the show. The locally funded event will take place at 10 p.m. and run for about 20 minutes.

2. July 4th Big Butte Fireworks Display, Butte

Independence Day celebrations in Butte date back to 1876, which means the town must know how to throw a party! The fireworks display will take place on July 3rd and the annual town parade comes marching through town on July 4th. If you can’t make it to the show, you can livestream it on the Town Pump Facebook page.

3. People’s Park & Recreation Fireworks, Great Falls

The town of Great Falls will celebrate Independence Day with a fireworks display beginning at 10:15 p.m. on July 4th. The display can be seen from Elk’s – Riverside Park, Eagle Falls Golf Course, or Centene Stadium, and each destination offers a great view towards West Bank Park. For double the fun, you can also see a fireworks display after the Great Falls Voyagers game which begins at 7 p.m.

4. Whitefish City Beach Fireworks, Whitefish

One of the best celebrations in the state takes place in Whitefish. Come hungry because the event includes lots of local food vendors including shaved ice, mini doughnuts, BBQ, and corn dogs. Plan on arriving in the early evening to grab some food and find a spot before the fireworks begin around 10:30 p.m. Note that the main City Beach parking lot will be closed and the Whitefish Lake State Park boat launch will close at 9 p.m., so be sure to make alternate arrangements.

5. Prickly Pear Community Fireworks Celebration, Helena

This East Helena celebration has taken place annually since 1957 and it continues this year with a fireworks display taking place thanks to the generous donations of local community members and businesses. With a few days to go, the event has raised 75 percent of its goal and has received a $25,000 match from Town Pump. You can make your own donation by stopping by Shellie’s Country Café or visiting the Prickly Pear Community Fireworks Celebration website.

6. Freedom Fest 2024, Florence

The fun begins at 1 p.m. when the Florence Aquatic Center hosts open swimming, games, and ongoing music until 5 p.m. The entry for this is free, so it’s likely to be busy. Arrive early to ensure you get a spot. After that, make your way to Heritage Park to enjoy water inflatables, games, live music, and (of course!) fireworks. Some of the games require registration ahead of time so be sure to check out the Florence Blade-Tribunte website.

7. Polson’s 2024 Fireworks Show and Parade, Polson

Polson prides itself on being one of the state’s most beloved spots to celebrate Independence Day. Another community donation-driven celebration, this event truly shines. The fun begins at Riverside Park on July 3rd at dusk. Find your spot and then wait for the impressive display to begin. Head home for a good night’s sleep before coming back for the Red, White, and BBQ 4th of July Parade down Main Street, which begins at noon. You can donate to the event at the Polson Chamber of Commerce website.

Remember that fire safety is the most important thing this time of year and using your own fireworks on public lands is illegal. We highly encourage you to attend one of these shows, which follow strict safety guidelines. Also, be sure to dress appropriately for weather that can change at any moment. Hopefully, “where to watch fireworks near me this Fourth of July” is off your list of summer worries!

Have you experienced any of these displays? We’d love to hear your thoughts on the most impressive and which are worth the drive.
