Amish... in Montana? Depending on which part of the Treasure State you call home, you may have noticed that a few Amish communities in Montana have popped up here in recent decades. The first one was established in Rexford, with the goal of returning to its agriculture-focused roots. We can't say we blame them -- after all, Montana is heaven on earth. But if you want to embark on an enjoyable day trip and visit a real Amish market, check out all the things to do in St. Ignatius, Montana. It's one of the most scenic day trip destinations in Montana.
St. Ignatius is a quiet, tiny, rural community with a population of only 834.
It's easy to see why the Amish would love it here. They began making a home in St. Ignatius around the year 2000, and their population has slowly and steadily grown ever since. Montana is the only state that has an Amish community on an Indian reservation.
The biggest draw to St. Ignatius is still the Mission, built in the 1890s by Catholic settlers.
The Mission is open daily, and it still draws tourists and locals who like a quiet place to worship.
When you visit, you'll definitely want to spend some time inside this beautiful structure, reflecting on Montana's past...
...but save plenty of time for shopping at the Mission General Store.
This is where you'll find all kinds of Amish goodies as well as Montana grown-and-raised meats and produce.
Don't be surprised if you see a lineup of horses and buggies in the parking lot with the cars.
The rural roads here are perfect for the Amish to use them.
The market was founded by Delbert Bontrager, who grew up in a large Amish community in Indiana, and his wife, Ruth, who grew up in the Amish community of Shipshewana, Indiana.
Their goal was to make wholesome food and Amish staples available to the community.
Mission General Store started as a discount grocery store, but the Bontragers quickly added a large deli.
They also sell Amish jams and jellies, baked goods, quilting supplies, cookbooks, and so much more.
When the weather cooperates, make a day trip to St. Ignatius and check out this unique community.
Mission General Store is open Monday through Saturday and is (understandably) closed on Sundays.
