Montana is breathtaking from any angle. But there is a pretty amazing trail up in Lincoln County near Libby that will show you a side you've never seen before. Just be forewarned if you're afraid of heights: It involves a swinging bridge that isn't for the faint of heart.
The Kootenai Swinging Bridge Trail is a short, mile-long hike that leads to the beautiful Kootenai Falls.
Not only is it one of our state's easiest hikes, but there's stunning scenery around every corner.
The trail takes you high above the trees, and right over the Kootenai River.
It won't be long before you come to the swinging bridge.
The original bridge was built by the Forest Service to access forest fires across the Kootenai River. When it was destroyed by a flood in 1948, it was rebuilt on concrete piers. The Libby Dam prevents the area from flooding.
The bridge sits at an elevation of 2,100 feet....
... and the views from it are breathtaking.
Just when you think the trail can't get any better, it ends here, at Kootenai Falls.
This is one of the largest free-flowing waterfalls in the Northwest, and it's certainly one of Montana's finest.
