General stores make us think of a simpler time. Luckily, Montana isn’t in a big hurry to change, and you’ll still find some old-fashioned general stores scattered throughout the state. Don’t miss the chance to explore one of these general stores in Montana for a blast from the past.
1. Fishtail General Store, Fishtail
This place has been selling "a little bit of everything" since 1900.
2. Mission General Store, St. Ignatius
This store focuses on grocery items and bulk foods, and you can find a lot of Amish gourmet foods on the shelves.
3. Cooke City Store, Cooke City
This store has been open since 1886, and it’s on the National Register of Historic Places list.
4. Emigrant General Store, Pay
This is a gas station and a convenience store with a historic looking storefront.
5. Thronson’s General Store, Babb
You’ll find Thronson’s General Store in Glacier County close to the Canadian border. They have a restaurant and motel in addition to their groceries. They are open seasonally, closing for the winter.
6. The Polebridge Mercantile, Polebridge
Groceries, gifts and baked goods... it doesn't get any better.
7. Gershmels General Store, Winnett
Winnett has a population of 194. Their general store sells groceries, hardware, gifts, pet and livestock supplies and hunting and fishing licenses.
