A suburb of St. Louis, St. Charles County has been one of the fastest-growing counties in Missouri for decades. With the impending suburban sprawl, you might assume greenspaces have been neglected in this region. Luckily, cities like Lake St. Louis, Missouri, are getting it right by adding trails in the heart of the city. My favorite part is how you feel far away from the bustle of daily life within minutes of accessing the wetland trial at Deer Ridge Park. This is even more surprising because the park is in the middle of a huge subdivision! You are just minutes from these trails if you’re traveling along the I-64 or I-70 highway corridor. Pulling off the highway to stop at this wetland trail in Lake St. Louis, Missouri is worth your time!

There are four interconnecting trails. I recommend snapping a pic of the map in the parking lot so you know what you’re getting yourself into. Once you cross the creek onto the Fawn Pass, Doe Run, and Antler Ridge trails, you are “stuck” on that side of the park. The habitats are diverse and beautiful, but there are some challenging hills.

For a more laid-back walk, mostly along the Peruque Creek, take the Whitetail Way trail. You are at the bottom of the wetland basin on this trail. I like to stop for a few minutes, look at all the different bird species overhead, and listen to critters in the woods. The last time I was there, I saw Mallard ducks courting in the creek.

You will find diverse tree species, scenic overlooks, and educational signs describing the habitat. They even suggest you return in different seasons to see the changing landscape.

The terrain does have some inclines, but overall, it is easy to traverse. This wetland trail in Lake St. Louis, Missouri is suitable for kids and pets and is family-friendly.
