The variety of small towns in Missouri is what makes our state so unique. Not too long ago, I introduced you to some of these towns that I believe are definitely worth a visit. But today, we're going to turn back the clock to the 1700s as we visit the oldest town in Missouri.
The beautiful town of Ste. Genevieve sits just west of the Mississippi River. It happens to be one of the most historic towns in Missouri.
In 1735, the village was founded by Canadian settlers and migrants from settlements in the Illinois Country. Most of the settlers were of French-Canadian descent, so it would only make sense that they'd want to name the village after Saint Genevieve, the patron saint of Paris.

Hints of French Creole colonial architecture are still evident in the town today.
Many of the houses were built based on wooden posts dug into the ground (poteaux en terre) or set on a raised stone or brick foundation (poteaux sur solle). The house shown above once belonged to Louis Bolduc, a successful merchant and trader in Ste. Genevieve during the late 1700s.

In addition to artifacts left by the French-Canadian settlers, the museum also stores artifacts from the Native Americans who lived in the area before them.
Luckily for us, present-day Ste. Genevieve, one of the oldest towns in Missouri, has even more to offer than before.
All along Merchant Street, Main Street, and Market Street, you'll find some pretty incredible restaurants. One of my favorites is Audobon's which is located at 9 N. Main Street in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri 63670.
The trolley ride through town is another way to explore Ste. Genevieve.
Enjoy a relaxing trolley ride through historic Ste. Genevieve. You can reserve it for a private group or make new friends on a public tour. Call ahead at (573) 535-1911 or visit them on Facebook.
If you're looking to explore the great outdoors, Hawn State Park is just a hop, skip, and a jump away.
Hike through the Whispering Pine Wild Area or marvel at the geology found in the unique bluffs that boulder over Pickle Creek.

Pull out your calendar, because Hermann is the place to be to celebrate the holiday season throughout November and December. The already-charming town transforms into a magical winter wonderland once November rolls around, promising a jam-packed menu of activities for the whole family. The holiday season in Hermann, MO, typically kicks off the third weekend of November. Join others celebrating the holidays in Missouri for the Holiday Fare Wine Trail along the Hermann Wine Trail (tickets are required). The Sounds of Starkenburg concerts and the Christmas market and the Children's Lantern Parade are also slated for November.

December also boasts a ton of activities, from Holiday House Tours to a Hermann Farm Christmas, the latter of which offers insight into German Christmas traditions and a tour of homes decked out in 19th-century decorations. If you've got kiddos, climb aboard the Missouri River Runner Express on Dec. 19, 2024, for a scenic train ride with Santa. The little ones can pose for photos with Santa and, when you arrive back at the Hermann Amtrak Station, the whole family can enjoy hot chocolate.
Stop by the Historic Rotunda, too, to admire the Christmas tables during the annual "Tablescapes," a display of decorated Christmas tables. The event will be held during the first two weekends of December. If you need an adults-only evening out, join the Santa Rampage. Dress up as Santa as you join other revelers on an epic pub crawl on the second Saturday in December.

You'll probably also have a ton of shopping to do for the holidays, and Christmas in Hermann, MO, delivers in a big way with the German bake sale at the Historic Hermann Museum, the Christmas Market in the Loft at Fernweh, and Christkindl Markt at Hermannhof. Gear up for a day of shopping by setting off on the Hermann Cookie Walk, typically held on the third Friday and Saturday in December. Advanced tickets are necessary. One of my favorite ways to celebrate Christmas in MO is on a cookie walk. I love trying cookies I might not otherwise eat and, well, I can't resist a delicious sugar rush now and then.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L.
