The mission of the Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary is to protect native habitats and wildlife and to provide opportunities for individuals of all ages to discover and connect with nature.
Located at 407 N. La Frenz Road in Liberty, this is the type of place where you’ll find yourself wanting to return over and over again. This nature sanctuary is named after Martha Lafite Thompson who lived from 1911 – 1975.
Martha grew up in Liberty and married Omar Thompson, who owned a greenhouse and nursery. The couple purchased 53 acres of land, which is currently the west section of the nature sanctuary. They worked with others to restore the property and create this dream-like outdoor space.

Today, when you visit, there is plenty to keep you busy. This destination is home to a nature center where you can learn about the natural world.
We recommend you bring your hiking boots as there are trails just waiting to be explored. There are nearly a dozen options and many trails connect, allowing you to create even longer adventures if you desire.
Keep in mind that the Nature Sanctuary and hiking trails are open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pets are not welcome on the trails.
If you plan your visit just right, you can also take part in one of the many events hosted by the nature sanctuary. You will find activities for young children and adults alike.
