Most people probably don't think of Missouri when they hear "white sand beaches." Those thoughts usually go to such exotic places as Hawaii, the Bahamas, and the Maldives. However, those Missourians who have been to Klondike Park have uncovered a true hidden gem - the most pristine, whitest sand in Missouri. If you've not yet been to this white sand beach, you owe it to yourself to plan a visit.
Hidden away in St. Charles County, Klondike Park in Augusta offers a cozy atmosphere, spanning just 250 acres and offering all of the amenities you'd expect at a local park.
While swimming is not permitted in the river at Klondike Park, you'll still find plenty to do, even if it just means plopping onto a river-side bench and admiring the scenery.
Klondike Park's white sand is the result of its past as a silica sand quarry. Today, the park sits along the popular Katy Trail and boasts a few of its own trails.
No matter how close you live to the park, you might also want to make an evening or a weekend of it. Klondike Park features six cabins and 43 campsites.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. Why I Love It: Fact: Airplanes are notoriously dry, dry, dry. No matter how much water I drink both before and during the flight, I always find myself in a hydration deficit for days. Missouri has over 100 native deciduous tree species, making the state a top fall-foliage viewing destination as the trees transform in preparation for winter. Some of the best spots to see these colors are near our mighty rivers, the Missouri and Mississippi, where towering old-growth trees come alive in a vibrant display of autumn color. Faust Park in Chesterfield, Missouri, is a standout location for fall color as it butts right up to the Missouri River lowlands.
The 200-acre park is in the heart of suburban Chesterfield, Missouri. Established in 1968, it was created to preserve the original estate of Missouri’s second governor, Frederick Bates. As you drive in, you will leave everyday life behind, greeted by historic buildings, tall trees, and open fields. Faust Park is full of history and charm, featuring a restored historic village, centuries-old farm buildings, and even a carousel. Families will also enjoy the large playground, making it a great spot to enjoy both nature and Missouri’s past during the fall months.
Look for signs to the Governor Bates Trail. A leisurely 2-mile trail winds through the St. Louis County park, offering a perfect way to take in the fall colors. Although the sign indicates the trial is a difficult, black diamond, that was not my experience. The trail begins by passing by a mansion, old farm equipment, and barns, leading you into a shaded forest where you’ll be under a canopy of changing leaves from old-growth trees. The wooded part of the trail is about a mile, and the other mile takes you past the park's unique structures.
One of my favorite things about Faust Park is the freedom to roam its open spaces and explore off the beaten path. The St. Louis County Parks website for Faust Park offers a detailed digital tour to explore the historic structures. If you gather a group of ten or more, they’ll even arrange a guided tour for a nominal fee. QR codes are scattered throughout the park to help you learn more about the history behind the buildings. There’s something special about seeing these well-preserved structures framed by vibrant fall foliage.
