Visit this historic family-owned restaurant in Excelsior Springs, Missouri - a small town rich with history. The natural stone walls and exposed brick in the bistro and shop remind you that you’re in a town established in 1880. The town was founded after settlers discovered medicinal qualities in the mineral water spring. Located in the historic downtown district, Willow Spring Mercantile, owned by Jim and Daphne Bowman, offers an all-in-one experience as a bistro, gift shop, tasting room, and gourmet food store.
Take a look at their Facebook page, and you can see the family-like atmosphere the owners create with their staff. My family was warmly greeted when we visited for lunch and we immediately started chatting with staff. Guests can enjoy distilled spirits, craft beers, and Missouri wines featured in the shop alongside delicious offerings from the lunch bistro menu. Each month, Willow Spring Mercantile hosts coursed dinners featuring thoughtfully paired local wines with gourmet dishes, providing a unique culinary experience every time.
Willow Spring Mercantile is located in the easily walkable historic downtown with 10+ places to explore.
As you step into the shop, you’re immediately greeted by hundreds of shimmering bottles of wine, beer, and spirits sourced from around Missouri.
If you’re with a large party, like I was, you might have to wait a bit for your table in the Basement Bistro on the lower level. But waiting is hardly inconvenient in a gift shop offering a diverse selection to suit every palate. And if liquor isn't your thing, they also have gourmet food, jewelry, artwork, coffee, tea, soap, and gift baskets.
The Basement Bistro offers daily specials and soups in alongside its regular full menu. It also accommodates vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free patrons upon request. The lunch menu includes appetizers, salads, sandwiches, wraps, flat-bread pizza, and desserts.
I highly recommend you save room for something sweet. Just look at this peanut buttery dessert!
Do not overlook their drink menu. They’re known for their coffee and flavored teas- made fresh daily. They also offer seasonal cocktails that are true works of art, some featuring wine for a fun twist. They boast the best beer selection in Missouri, so be sure to sample something off the drink menu and then grab some to go from the shop upstairs.
The bistro is surprisingly cozy for being in a basement! Just take in the historic charm with its wood beams and exposed stone walls.
If you want to extend your experience beyond lunch, consider planning your visit around one of their monthly four-course wine dinners. Owners Jim and Daphne host these events, purposefully pacing the meal so guests can get to know each other. This adorable couple has been serving the community since 2005. Get your tickets and learn more about upcoming dinners on their website.
