A day spent exploring any of Mississippi’s natural wonders or incredible hiking trails would be a day well spent. But who says you have to choose? Thanks to the Cypress Swamp Loop Trail you can do both – visit a natural wonder and go on a great hike. And at only ½-mile long, the trail is suitable for just about every age and skill level. Boasting history, great views, and an improved trail that’s easy to navigate, it’s probably the shortest and sweetest hike in the state. Take a look:

Located on the Natchez Trace, the Cypress Swamp Loop Trail can be found at milepost 122, just north of Jackson.
Named one of the "Top 20 Natural Wonders" on the Trace, a visit to the majestic swamp should definitely be on your bucket list.
Totaling 0.5 miles, the loop trail, which is rated "easy," can be completed in about 20 minutes. Although, you’ll probably want to give yourself more time to explore the enchanting surroundings.
The trail begins with signage that provides details about the magical realm that lies ahead.
When you’re ready to start your journey, step onto the wooden footbridge and begin your descent into the swamp.
The elevated trail puts you right above the water, giving you a unique glimpse of the swamp below.
Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife sightings. In addition to squirrels and turtles…
…you may spot an alligator (or two).
As you meander along the trail, you’ll eventually make your way to an abandoned river channel, which is full of cypress trees and "knees."
Easy to navigate, full of mystical beauty, and completely FREE, the Cypress Swamp Loop Trail is a hidden gem worth seeking out!
