There are so many beautiful towns in Mississippi to explore, and Oxford ranks high on our list. The town has a population of about 25,000, but the historic downtown area still gives off those small-town vibes that make it so enchanting. Whether you’re planning on a day trip or a weekend getaway, you’ll never run out of things to do here. Let’s check it out:
Oxford is often called one of Mississippi's most beautiful cities, and it's easy to see why.
Founded in 1837, Oxford was named after the British city, and is perhaps best-known for being the home to the University of Mississippi.
The downtown area, known as the Square, is full of historic buildings, unique shopping opportunities, and local restaurants.
Of course, you can’t mention Mississippi and not speak to music. The Lyric Theater is Oxford’s largest music venue, and often features live performances.
Check out the event schedule and catch a show during your visit.
Square Books, founded in 1979, is one of the most popular independent bookstores in Mississippi, and well worth a visit.
Speaking of books, William Faulkner called Oxford home and used the city as inspiration for many of his greatest works.
His home, Rowan Oak, is open for tours and well worth a few hours checking out the former home of this Novel Prize-winning novelist.
And don't forget about the food. There are plenty of restaurants in Oxford to grab a bite to eat.
We'd recommend Ajax Diner. Conveniently located in the Square, Ajax serves up all your favorite Southern staples, just like grandma used to make.
After you've toured the downtown scene, strolled through Ole Miss, and picked up a new book to read, head over to Lamar Park for a little peace and quiet.
With ample green space, hiking trails, and downright delightful scenery, Lamar Park is the perfect way to end a day touring Oxford.
