General stores are far and few between. General stores that have been in business since the 1800s are even rarer. But they do exist – and you’ll find one hiding in small-town Mississippi. The historic shop first opened its doors back in 1892. Stop by today, and you can stock up on general store goods and even grab a great meal. Take a look:
This is H.D. Gibbes & Sons. It’s tucked away in the tiny town of Learned, which is about 30 miles southeast of Vicksburg.
The exterior of the building looks rather aged — and that’s because it is. The building dates back to 1892!
Practically frozen in time, H.D. Gibbes & Sons is still a fully-functioning general store stocked with a variety of convenience items.
Of course, the merchandise has been updated to include modern-day goods, such as paper towels, snacks, and more. Antiques are also part of the store’s present-day merchandise.
Aside from updating its merchandise, there has been one more change — the store began serving dinner.
The dinner menu includes a variety of mouthwatering entrees. Lamb chops and steak are among the eatery’s specialties.
In order to accommodate diners, long, banquet-style tables were added to the store, and it’s a good thing because…
…despite its remote locale, it continuously draws in hungry crowds from near and far.
In fact, it's such a popular spot, a crowd — and a wait — is likely but well worth it.
Remember, dinner is only served Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, so make sure to plan your visit accordingly.
So, are you ready to pay a visit to this incredible piece of history?
