If you’ve spent time in Minnesota, you probably know about some of our most famous forests. The vast Superior National Forest draws hikers and campers throughout the year. And smaller forests, such as the Lost 40 or the Minnesota-shaped forest, are unique parts of history that also bring in plenty of visitors. But there are some less popular forests that are well worth visiting, too. For example, have you ever heard of Sand Dunes State Forest? This little-known place is full of beautiful nature scenes and plenty to do.
Sand Dunes State Forest is a lovely forest in Sherburne County, Minnesota. It’s about 50 miles northwest of Minneapolis or 30 miles southeast of St. Cloud.
The forest covers 11,040 acres, much of it made up of oak savanna and prairie. There’s also a 2,700 acre stretch of pine.
Trails through the forest offer beautiful glimpses of this lovely landscape. Be sure to wear proper gear, as some areas of the trail tend to be overgrown at times.
Another popular part of the forest is Sand Dunes Horse Camp. Many Minnesotans bring their horses here during summer weekends.
There’s also a scientific and natural area - Uncas Dunes SNA - nestled within the park. While there aren’t rolling sand dunes here anymore, the land is still very sandy. The SNA preserves the unique plant and animal life found in this habitat.
Sand Dunes State Forest is also home to Ann Lake, a small but lovely lake with a sandy shoreline.
From camping to hiking to enjoying the gorgeous forest and lake scenery, a trip to Sand Dunes State forest is a wonderful way to spend some time in nature!
