Have you ever been to Itasca State Park? This northern Minnesota park is home to the headwaters of the Mississippi River, making it a popular place to go for those who would like to take part in the tradition of walking across the river. The park is especially popular in the summer months thanks to its hiking trails, campsites, fire tower, and other wonderful attractions. But Itasca State Park is a wonderful place to visit in the winter, too. Under a blanket of snow, perfect peace and quiet descend upon the park. It's an excellent place to get away from it all. Here's what you'll find when you get there:
Itasca State Park is a 32,000-acre state park in northern Minnesota. It's about 30 miles south of Bemidji, or 215 miles north of the Twin Cities. The park is beautiful throughout the year, but winter brings a special kind of beauty.
As soon as you pull into the park, you'll find a snow-covered oasis. The road, lined with trees, feels like the gateway to a winter wonderland.
After you park, it's time to explore the park's many hiking trails! There are more than 40 miles of
hiking trails through the park, as well as 13 miles of snowshoeing trails and 31 miles of snowmobile trails.
As you explore, you'll be entranced by the silence of this snow-covered park. With few other guests, there is perfect peace and quiet to be found at snow-covered Itasca State Park.
Aside from the quiet woods, you'll also enjoy the view of Lake Itasca. The sight of the snow-covered trees that surround the lake is simply breathtaking.
Of course, you can't visit Itasca State Park without visiting the headwaters of the Mississippi River. This is where the waters of Lake Itasca begin their voyage south to the Gulf of Mexico. It's a common sight, but a blanket of snow gives it a whole new beauty!
