One Minnesota hot dog joint in St. Paul has been slinging Coney Islands to its hungry customers since the 1930s. And plenty of people will tell you that the venerable Gopher Bar, a beloved dive on the edge of St. Paul’s Lowertown neighborhood, still serves up the best coneys in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

Although not what it used to be since the 2022 death of the bar’s longtime, irascible, and occasionally foul-mouthed patriarch, George Kappas (Andy and Phyllis’ son) a visit to the Gopher requires a sense of humor and, sometimes, a thick skin. (You could try and don some Gopher apparel to blend in…) So be prepared. And also bring cash. It’s all the bar will take, and you really don’t want to ask if your credit card is accepted.
