Myre-Big Island State Park is a beautiful - but lesser-known - state park about 100 miles south of the Twin Cities, in Albert Lea, Minnesota. It's a wonderful destination for those exploring out-of-the-way Minnesota state parks!
The park has plenty to offer, from beautiful wildflowers in the spring and summer to oak savanna, wetlands, and hardwood forests. Many enjoy visiting when the leaves change for a spectacular show from the trees.
There's also plenty of wildlife on display here. Deer, foxes, raccoons, bats, and other mammals roam the landscape. In addition to the species that live here year-round, the spring and fall migrations bring in thousands of birds of many species.
The biggest draw of the park, however, may be Albert Lea Lake. This nearly 2,700-acre lake is a lovely place to fish, boat, bird-watch, and simply enjoy the view. Myre-Big Island offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the lake, from a fishing dock...
...to a causeway leading to the park's most unique attraction: its island. Big Island is a 116-acre island that you can walk to via a causeway from the mainland.
The beautiful island is covered in a forest of maple and basswood trees. It's a lovely place for a nature walk!
Rest areas along the causeway and island offer peaceful places to enjoy the view. Perhaps the only island that you can walk to in Minnesota, Big Island at Myre-Big Island State Park is a unique - and beautiful - place to visit!
