So, perhaps Grand Island National Recreation Area isn’t the most off-the-radar spot in Michigan. However, I’d wager that when most leaf peepers index their favorite autumn spots, they prioritize local destinations that capture the Great Lake State’s cozy fall charm— and rightfully so. But Michigan didn’t earn its nickname for nothing. That’s why I think you’ll find the most beautiful fall foliage in Michigan just outside the small town of Munising on Lake Superior.

With a population of just under 2,000 people, Munising— named for the Ojibwe word minisiing, meaning "at the island"— is known as the gateway to Grand Island National Recreation Area. Though it's more commonly considered a summer destination, I'm willing to make the case that this island paradise is at its best in the fall.
