1. Blake's Big Apple
You might be familiar with Blake's Orchard and Cider Mill in the tiny town of Armada, but Blake's Big Apple is another worthwhile stop – and it’s loaded with quirky charms. Aptly named for the giant apple that sits atop the building, this spot offers everything from U-Pick options on a seasonal basis to market purchases for those who just want to take home some fresh cider, donuts, and other treats. During the Halloween season, the Big Apple is also home to a variety of spooky events, so time your visit accordingly to one of the best country towns in MI.
2. Wilderness Trails Zoo
Next, make your way to Birch Run to mingle with a variety of adorable animals. You don’t have to visit one of Michigan’s larger zoos to appreciate interactions with all sorts of creatures, and this lesser-known spot is proof. There are 56 acres to explore at Wilderness Trails Zoo, where you’ll encounter everything from zebras to camels to tigers and lions. No matter your age, this spot is sure to capture your imagination and add a dose of wild fun to your rural road trip through Michigan.
3. Rosebush Farm Market
Whether you’re hoping to pick up some flowers to spruce up your home, snagging some fresh eats for the road, or simply seeking a quiet stop that promises small-town friendliness, Rosebush Farm Market will delight you. Tucked away along North Mission Road in Rosebush, this is a low-key stop along your rural journey through the state. Gardeners and foodies alike will find treasure here, while others will appreciate the laid-back atmosphere and a chance to stretch their legs.
4. Waldeck Island Nature Preserve
As you continue on the road, you might find yourself longing for a stroll or an opportunity to connect further with the great outdoors. This is where Waldeck Island Nature Preserve comes in! This 11-mile wonderland is decidedly small and underrated when compared to many of Michigan’s other natural areas, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth checking out. Waldeck Island features peaceful trails for adventuring in every season, not to mention access to Stone Ledge Lake. The trails here are appropriate for hikers of all levels, so you can bring along the kids without a care.
5. Crystal Lake Alpaca Farm and Boutique
Whether you’re a shopaholic or an animal lover (or both!), you’ll enjoy visiting Crystal Lake Alpaca Farm and Boutique. This fascinating farm and shop offers the chance to purchase high-quality products made from incredibly soft alpaca wool – if you’re not careful, you might leave with a pile of clothing, scarves, gifts for friends, and so much more. Of course, you can opt out of shopping and simply check out the alpacas and other creatures who call the farm home, but we think you should treat yourself to a sweater or two.
6. Garden Cafe at Pine Hill Nursery
Feeling hungry after all that driving? Venture to the Garden Cafe in Kewadin for an incredibly unique and serene dining experience. This lovely eatery is tucked away within Pine Hill Nursery, so you can double up your garden center visit with a bite to eat. Many of the food served at the cafe is grown on site, so there’s no doubt you’ll enjoy the freshest ingredients around. From sandwiches to wraps to baked goods, you’ll find lots to enjoy as you bask in the calming, nature-centric atmosphere.
