When you’re hoping to combine history, natural beauty, and family fun into one fantastic outing, look no further than this one-of-a-kind trail in the Great Lakes State.
The Saginaw Valley Rail Trail is located in - you guessed it - Saginaw County.
This incredible hiking trail follows the path of a former rail route, which was once used by the Jackson, Lansing, and Saginaw Railroad during the 1860s.
Today, visitors of all ages can appreciate the historic atmosphere of the trail, as well as its vibrant setting for outdoor adventuring in all sorts of weather.
With several different trailheads to begin from (see below for details), the Saginaw Valley Rail Trail extends for a total of 11 miles between St. Charles and Saginaw.
Whether you’re walking, jogging, cross-country skiing, or bicycling, you’ll have a blast during your journey down this delightful pathway.
The trail features seven bridges, each of which offers unique vantage points from which to observe birds and other species that call this area home.
Along the trail, hikers will find several "pocket parks," which serve as resting points and beautiful picnic spots for families throughout the year.
From Marsh Creek to Swan Creek, there are plenty of chances to observe water-bound flora and fauna. You might even spot a fisherman or two.
To access the trail, park at one of three lots. These areas sit at 6225 Stroebel Road and 2998 Van Wormer in James Township, along with 401 East Water Street in St. Charles.
Whether you’re taking a leisurely bike ride in the dog days of summer or enjoying the crunch of a fresh snowfall along the trail in January, you’re sure to have a blast.
