At OnlyInYourState, we believe a restaurant’s longevity is always a good indicator of what type of experience you’ll have. When you find yourself at New Hudson Inn, Michigan’s oldest operating bar, you can rest assured that you’ll leave with a full belly and a happy heart. This Oakland County restaurant and bar has been a Michigan landmark since 1831, which is older than Michigan’s statehood! There’s a lot to love about this historic spot, but perhaps the main reason to stop by is to feast on one of the best burgers in Michigan. Come with us as we check out some of the delicious food and burgers on New Hudson Inn’s menu.
New Hudson Inn's history is certainly one for the books.
Russell Alvord, a New York Native living in what would become Michigan, received a 40-acre plot of land from President Andrew Jackson and opened "The Tavern" in 1831.
The building has changed ownership several times over the last 200 years, and its use has volleyed back and forth between a hotel, a saloon, and a restaurant.
If these walls could talk, oh, the stories they would tell! Legend has it that during the Civil War, the upstairs served as a main stop along the Underground Railroad.
Today, Michigan’s oldest operating bar serves as a local watering hole as well as a pit stop for travelers on their way along I-96.
Live music in the evenings attracts many locals looking to enjoy local musicians while sipping on a large selection of tasty adult beverages.
The menu at New Hudson Inn features a wide range of American staples that would please any palate.
If you’re an early riser, swing by for breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays before noon. New Hudson Inn serves a full breakfast menu including all your favorites like pancakes and omelets, plus some sinfully delicious, freshly made donuts.
From salads to cheese steaks, there's something for everyone.
But the real stars of the show at this restaurant are the burgers.
Best burgers in Michigan, that's for sure.
There are several different specialty burgers to choose from, each one bigger and bolder than the last.
All of the burgers are served with fries or house-made chips.
You're also welcome to build your own burger from the bun up, creating a uniquely special burger with all your favorite toppings.
Just don't forget about the signature sauces that New Hudson Inn has become known for. Dip your fries, dip your burger, dip it all!
