Man Made Lake is located off Dunes Drive in the shoreline community of Manistee. The appropriately named lake sits just a stone’s throw from Lake Michigan and neighboring Manistee Lake.
This peaceful body of water was formed by way of sand mining in the area. Manistee has offered recreational use of the lake since the late 1990s, so many locals grew up swimming at this spot.
When you’re looking for a laid-back place to spend the day and want to avoid the oft-overwhelming crowds of Lake Michigan, Man Made Lake fits the bill. Snag a parking spot and make the short stroll to the water.
Many visitors opt to swim at Man Made Lake when the conditions at Lake Michigan are too rough or cold. Its slightly inland location gives the lake a more peaceful atmosphere, so you can swim with the whole family.
Take time to play in the sand or set up your beach chairs for a bit of rest and relaxation under the sun. Other visitors opt to bring along their fishing lines, as Man Made Lake is home to plenty of marine creatures.
For an extended adventure, head straight from this man made locale to Fifth Avenue Beach, which sits just adjacent. Manistee’s 1st Street Beach is also close, so you’ve got plenty of options for visiting the Big Lake.
Even when temperatures aren’t quite suitable for swimming, Man Made Lake provides a scenic place to enjoy some fresh air and escape the stresses of daily life. Stay until sunset to appreciate pretty views.
When you’re not in the mood for a trip to one of Michigan’s more crowded beaches, Man Made Lake is a great option. Load up the car, stock up on sunscreen, and head out for a day of splashing and relaxing.
