Ready to take a step back in time? While we can’t quite seem to nail down authentic time machine technology, we can appreciate glimpses of our city’s fascinating past – and one historic site in the Motor City offers the opportunity to do just that. When you’re searching for a fun spot to explore during your next family day trip, head to this authentic log cabin in Detroit.
Palmer Park is located along Merrill Plaisance Street in Detroit. We’ve featured this fascinating park in other articles for its historical touches and abundance of fresh air, greenery, and recreational opportunities.
Within the park, you’ll find the Palmer Park Log Cabin. If you’re interested in the Motor City’s earlier eras and the fascinating story behind Palmer Park itself, you’ll enjoy checking out this one-of-a-kind spot.
The cabin is the only remaining authentic log cabin in the city of Detroit, built in 1885 for Senator Thomas Palmer and his wife, Lizzie Merrill Palmer. In its heyday, the cabin was used as a party venue by the couple.
During this era, the space that now makes up Palmer Park was considered lush countryside outside the burgeoning city. When you drop by today, you can easily imagine the park’s original rural atmosphere.
The log cabin itself is rarely open to the public, though renovation efforts are underway to restore its original charms and bolster its ability to host indoor events. For now, guests can admire the building from outside.
Despite many years of prior neglect, the cabin continues to be lovingly updated by the People for Palmer Park. In fact, the organization even hosts a Log Cabin Day to give locals a rare chance to step inside.
If you are lucky enough to step inside (or even just peek in the windows), you’ll notice a beautifully designed Victorian aesthetic. While the exterior is rusticly inspired, there are stunning touches awaiting within.
Even if you’re only able to snap a few photos from outside, a stop at the Palmer Park Log Cabin will add a fun sense of history to your next family day trip. Kids and adults alike will enjoy this glimpse into the past.
