The Great Lakes are part of Michigan’s identity. Each body of water tells a story and each one comes with its own unique features. If you get the opportunity to spend a night sleeping by the shoreline in Michigan, it’s not something you should pass up.
One of the best places to sleep next to the sounds of the crashing waves is at Harrisville State Park. There are several breathtaking campsites on our list of The 22 Best Campgrounds in Michigan. You’ll be ready to paddle off into the sunset at this hidden gem hotspot.
You’ll find this state park on the shores of Lake Huron. While much of that shoreline is rocky, these campsites back up to some of the sandier parts. It’s one of Michigan’s oldest state parks first opening its gates in 1921.
Activities are endless on their numerous trails, beaches, and campsites. Whether you’re paddle boarding and hiking during the summer or snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in the winter, this park can be enjoyed year-round.
This state park is in a pretty remote part of Michigan, but you’d think this was one of the busier locations on our list of The 22 Best Campgrounds in Michigan. There are 195 campsites with a variety of 20, 30, and 50 amp hookups.
If you’re lucky, you can book a spot on the edge of the Lake Huron shoreline. You’ll never have to worry about being too far away from the water. Reservations are made on the Michigan DNR website for only $30 per night.

You can also easily pitch a tent at any of the camp spots. There are fire pits and modern restrooms which can be an underrated addition to any experience.
There are two cabin options available that offer two different experiences. This is the Sunrise Rustic cabin that sleeps up to six people. It doesn’t come with electricity but it uses propane for the stove and heating. Renters are asked to bring their own linens and cookware.
There are also two mini cabins that sleep four people each. These are electric and come with more kitchen appliances. These can be rented year-round for between $51-84 per night. Pets are also allowed to stay in these cabins for an extra charge.
This is a great spot to enjoy the water even if you’re not staying the night. The park features more than a mile of shoreline with several boat launches. Kayaking, paddle boarding, and swimming are all great options if you’re not using a motor.
There’s even a dog beach for your four-legged friends. Make sure you keep the flag warning season in mind if you venture into the water.
There are more than four miles of trails to keep you busy between the Cedar Run and Heritage nature trails. Both offer year-round opportunities with cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter.
Jogging, hiking, and biking are popular options in the summer. For those looking for an easier path, try the two-mile paved path on the Heritage Trail.
If you like the idea of backing your RV right up to the water and leaving every other worry behind, you might want to check out Harrisville State Park.
