Hathaway’s Pond in Hyannis is just such a place.
Hathaway’s Pond is tucked away off of Phinney’s Lane. It’s beautiful area, but most people would never think to look for such a pristine swimming hole on Cape Cod so close to the major attractions of downtown Hyannis. This might be why Hathaway’s Pond stays relatively peaceful even until June, while many of the larger Cape Cod ponds and beaches are swamped with tourists by May.
The water here is a sparkling turquoise color and the sand is clean and white. There are quite a few grills and picnic tables dotting the shore, and plenty of space to spread a blanket. The water is warm enough to swim even in the early morning and you can also kayak, canoe, paddle board, and fish here.

The beach is especially popular with families due to the gentle surf, clean water, and maple shade. Even better, there’s a full restroom area and a lifeguard on duty during the summer months. Please note that dogs are not allowed at the pond from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from May to September, but are welcome outwith those hours in the summer and at all times in the off-season.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. Natural wonders abound in the Bay State. The Brewster Tidal Flats extend nearly 10 miles along Cape Cod Bay from Brewster through North Eastham. You can see the flats at low tide when the water recedes over one mile into the bay.
Once the tide goes out, there's sand as far as the eye can see. Many people like to walk far out onto the flats during the low tide. I did that with my dad and children one summer and it was quite an adventure!
During low tide across the flats, you can see sandbars, clam beds, oyster farms, and tidal pools that are overflowing with life. It's an extraordinary time to be here. We all took time to see what sea creatures we could find in the tide pools.
This great expanse provides a wonderful place to hike, look for seashells, find sea life, and just marvel at such a magnificent natural phenomenon. People also come here to go oystering.
While they aren't the largest tidal flats in the world, it's amazing to have the largest mudflats on the entire North American continent right here in Massachusetts. These tidal flats are among the most unique and best natural wonders in Massachusetts to see and experience.
Because crabs were coming after our feet as we walked, I decided that a pair of water shoes would be necessary for next time!
