There's no arguing how scenic Massachusetts is with its varied landscape of beaches, wetlands, and mountains. With thousands of trails around the state, we have our pick when it comes to hikes. And lucky for us, there are plenty of easy, family-friendly hikes that lead to unforgettable views. One such hike is located at Halibut State Park in Rockport which leads visitors through the forest, around a rock quarry, and eventually to a rocky beach.
Halibut Point Trail, located within Halibut State Park, is a 1.6-mile easy loop that is good for all hiking skill levels and one the whole family can enjoy.
Along this interpretive trail is a variety of landscapes, wildlife, and wildflowers. You'll hike through a lush forest, around a historic quarry, and eventually, you'll have endless views of the Atlantic.
On clear days, you may be able to see Mt. Agameticus in Maine which is 81 miles away as well as the Isles of Shoals off of the New Hampshire coast.
A walk through the woods leads to a former granite quarry where you can learn the history from interpretive signs.
The Babson Farm Quarry once played an important role in the history of Cape Ann's granite industry, which first started here in 1840 and stopped in 1929. The quarry has since filled with rain and run-off and has a maximum water depth of 60 feet.
The park is filled with granite that is 440 million years old.
The trail eventually leads down to the rocky coastline and a beach where you can enjoy the sound of crashing waves and ocean views.
When it's open, you are free to come inside the visitors center and look at the exhibits featuring the fascinating history of the park. The center is actually housed in a renovated World War II fire-control tower.
