The gingerbread village of Wesleyan Grove in Oak Bluffs, Martha’s Vineyard just might be the most magical community ever.
This tucked away community is packed with hundreds of bright, Victorian cottages. There are 318, to be exact.
While the neighborhood looks like a storybook come to life, the cottages are actually a preserved collection of Methodist camp meeting houses located in a 34-acre National Historic Landmark District.
The first permanent homes were built in the 1860s. Prior to that, the community had convened in makeshift tents. Since then, the little village has been a spiritual haven on the island.
Almost all the homes are decorated with colorful bargeboard, and intricately carved trim.
The landscape is equally charming. Big, beautiful bunches of hydrangeas and lush, flowering planters complement nearly every cottage.
The homes are tiny, but pack a huge visual punch.
To top it all off, this gingerbread city is located within sniffing distance of the sea.
Walking around this place will definitely inject more than a little cheer into your spirit.
The village continues to hold many cultural, religious and artistic programs and events for the community.
Visitors should definitely stop by the Cottage Museum to learn about the history of the settlement, and check out some original furnishings and personal items.
