If Massachusetts had state colors, they might very well be orange and pink. That’s because the legendary doughnut and coffee chain Dunkin’ Donuts (now known simply as Dunkin’) is ubiquitous in the Bay State. But did you know that the very first Dunks actually opened in Quincy?
Dunkin’ Donuts has been serving breakfast treats and piping-hot java for more than 60 tears. The chain was founded by William Rosenberg in Quincy, Massachusetts in 1950. The idea for Dunkin’ Donuts came to Rosenburg after he realized that doughnuts and coffee were the most popular lunchtime snacks at the construction sites where he peddled food.

In a state where historical monuments and centuries-old homes are fiercely protected, it should come as no surprise that the very first Dunkin’ storefront is still around today. Not only is the original Dunkin’ Donuts store still standing, but it’s actually still serving doughnuts!
The original shop is located in Quincy and is delightfully retro. Though all other Dunkin’ Donuts stores have been redesigned and rebranded over the years to keep up with the times, this shop is decorated in a vintage vibe. In fact, the sign above the shop is the original script version first used at the location in 1955.
Inside, customers will be greeted with that familiar Dunkin’ scent of doughnuts and coffee, but the styling of this shop is definitely unique. Rare photos from the brand’s history hang from the walls and mid-century modern wood paneling and chairs give the space a decidedly retro atmosphere. You can learn more about the history of this shop from the giant brass coffee cup marker on the wall.
Besides being the site of the very first Dunkin’ Donuts, this shop is actually a family-run business. The Carvalho family has been operating the shop since 1979, meaning this chain restaurant has a lot of heart. Stop by soon to experience a bit of Massachusetts nostalgia and savor a sweet, frosted taste of the past.
You can find the original Dunkin’ Donuts shop at 543 Southern Artery, Quincy, Mass. For another awesome and unique fast food shop in Massachusetts, click here.
