Did you know that Massachusetts is the second largest producer of cranberries in the country behind Wisconsin? In 2020 alone, the state produced 2.06 million barrels of the crimson-colored berries. It's almost hard not to think of Massachusetts when cranberries are mentioned! During the fall harvest season, cranberry bog tours are offered through the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers Association. If you've ever been curious about the process and how these berries go from the bog to your Thanksgiving dinner table, a Cranberry Bog Bus Tour is a great way to learn.
North America has over 1,000 cranberry bogs, and 400 of these are in Massachusetts, mostly in Plymouth County and Cape Cod. Fun fact: the cranberry is the official state fruit of Massachusetts!
The Cape Cod Cranberry Growers' Association offers Cranberry Bog Bus Tours each year during the harvest season. Those who sign up will meet the tour bus at the Plymouth Airport.
During this informative event, visitors will learn about the history of cranberries in the Bay State, what occurs during the growing season, and the harvesting process. You will also get to meet some of the farmers and witness a wet harvest at one of the area's many bogs.
Your guided tour will last between 90 minutes and two hours, depending on the bog you visit.
The cranberry season normally begins at the end of September and goes through the end of October. Some years, it even extends into November. If timed right, you can see the cranberries at the same time as the colorful fall foliage, which will add an extra bit of color to the already colorful scenery!
This year's Cranberry Bog Bus Tours will be held on Oct. 2 and Oct. 11, 2021 at 10 a.m. and Oct. 9, 10, and 16, 2021 at both 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Tickets can be purchased online ahead of time at $18 per person for ages 5 and older. Children under 5 are free.
