Taza makes stone ground chocolate that is unlike any of the chocolate you’re used to.
They use hand-carved granite millstones to grind cacao beans. This gives their chocolate a unique, gritty texture and bold flavor you can’t find anywhere else.
Taza is best known for their rustic, organic dark Mexican-style chocolate discs that are full of unique add-ins and bold textures.
The tour is only $8, and you’ll make up that cost in the delicious free samples provided.
You’ll see the chocolate being ground by the special millstones, and learn about the history of chocolate-making.
The Taza factory is on the smaller side, so you’ll be able to ask questions and get a real, up-close look at the chocolatey action.
The whole walkthrough will take you about 45 minutes, and be prepared to try a wide variety of chocolate during that time!
The Chocolate Guides will load you up with plenty of chocolate samples, which makes this the perfect way to satisfy your curiosity and your sweet tooth at the same time.
In fact, the number one comment people make after taking a tour is "there were so many samples!"
If you want to try a particular flavor but don’t see it on offer as a sample, the staff is happy to provide you with a taste.
For families with kids under 10, the factory also offers special Chocolate Story Time events on Saturdays and Sundays at 10:30 a.m.
You can also schedule a private tour if you have a special someone with a real love of chocolate.
We can’t think of a sweeter way to spend an hour.
You can find Taza Chocolate at 561 Windsor Street, Somerville. To take the tour, reservations are required. Check out their website here to see tour availability, make a reservation, and learn more about the factory.
