Royalston is a tiny town surrounded by wildlife management areas and forests. Although it’s only about 76 miles from Boston, the pastoral setting makes the town feel much more remote. These green spaces appeal to hikers and the area’s lakes attract kayakers. The impressive waterfalls tucked away in the woods only increase this destination’s allure.
According to the last census, a scant 1,258 people call Royalston home.
Of course, you don't have to complete the whole circuit to view some of the prettiest places in Massachusetts. After visiting Doane's Falls, continue north to Spirit Falls and Jacobs Hill. This portion of the trail offers soothing scenery for hikers.
Should you wish to continue your trek, head further along the trail to Royalston Falls.
You can cheat and travel by car, as Royalston Falls lies a short distance - roughly 1.5 miles round trip - off Athol-Richmond Road. Be aware that taking the alternative approach along Falls Road involves dirt roads and bumpy conditions.
If you'd rather be on the water than beside it, visit Coddings Meadow or Tully Lake, a 200-acre lake that's great for kayaking or fishing (as always, you need a fishing license).

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. Fancy a holiday road trip? Deerfield is not only brimming with quaint and historic colonial houses, but the town is also where you’ll find the Yankee Candle Village. Here Christmas is celebrated every day of the year. Practice makes perfect! Where else can you find the world’s tallest indoor Christmas tree or experience snow falling inside, every four minutes!? Some of the best Christmas lights near Boston can be found in Attleboro. The National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette features more than 400,000 twinkling lights that you can enjoy. Portsmouth is always a charming town and it’s just a quick jaunt from Boston. Each winter, the city hosts its annual holiday festival, Vintage Christmas in Portsmouth, during which the town’s historic, red brick buildings are decked out in festive decorations. It’s an ideal place for a wintery stroll.
Check out Tower Hill Botanic Garden's annual light show, which boasts a different theme each year. Regardless of the theme, though, you'll be dazzled by enchanting landscapes, fun experiences, and thousands of lights. Seasonal refreshments and photo-ops are also part of the festivities.
