Few people realize that one of the oldest theme parks in the country is hiding right here in Maryland. Trimper's Rides in Ocean City began back in 1893 and has since been welcoming families from near and far for a full day of family fun. Whether you have a weakness for haunted houses, classic roller coaster rides, or carnival food, you owe it to yourself to check out this antique boardwalk theme park.
Tucked away in the inlet of South First Street awaits a classic Maryland experience that has stood the test of time. Trimper's Rides was established in 1893 when it opened as the Windsor Resort.
This exciting boardwalk property featured a massive carousel with over 40 animals. A ride on the carousel, which was driven by a steam train, cost just a nickel.
The carousel ride is still open today, although prices have increased to $2 a ride and the mechanism is now electric.
When you visit, be sure to take time to admire the ornate decor and handiwork that has contributed to this classic amusement park aesthetic.
The theme park has certainly expanded over the decades, yet its essence remains the same: a staple of the Ocean City boardwalk where visitors of all ages can enjoy some good ol' fashioned fun.
Perhaps one of the most popular attractions at Trimper's Rides is the Haunted House. The original version was built Bill Tracy in 1964 as a one-level room off the boardwalk.
Today, the Haunted House is a two-story indoor ride that takes passengers through a completely dark haunted house. You can bet there are plenty of tricks and spooks along the way!
Another noteworthy stop is Pirate's Cove, which is a walk-through fun house and one of the only remaining of its kind in the world.
Other beloved attractions include the Tea Cup Ride, the Rock N' Roll Matterhorn ride, Mirror Maze, and the Tidal Wave ride.
So whether you're taking the kids out for the day, or you yourself are a kid-at-heart, you'll find that this beloved Maryland attraction has certainly stood the test of time.
Trimper's Rides and Amusement Park is located at South 1st Street & Boardwalk, Ocean City, MD 21842. For more information on this beloved attraction, including hours and admission, be sure to visit the official website here.
