Every now and then, the urge to get away from all the hustle and bustle of city life strikes me. When days like that come around, I always catch myself daydreaming about escaping to a small rural area where I can spend my days surrounded by nature and my evenings relaxing in quiet modern comfort. Luckily for us Marylanders, we have the perfect small town for exactly that kind of mood. Lusby is a small community in Calvert County that has incredible natural wonders on all sides, and which is steeped in the maritime heritage of the Chesapeake Bay. It’s an absolute must-visit for any like-minded nature lovers looking for some peace and quiet away from it all! Let's explore this incredible rural community Maryland:
Flag Ponds Nature Park is an incredible mix of natural environments, from sandy beaches to freshwater ponds to the brackish water of the Chesapeake Bay shore. Sharp-eyed visitors have been known to find shark’s teeth and other fossils that can be anywhere from 5 to 20 million years old!
Lusby is close by to the beautiful Cove Point Lighthouse, the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay. During the summer the grounds are open to the public, so you can explore the grounds and get a great view of the bay.
These gorgeous natural landmarks known as the Calvert Cliffs extend for almost 25 miles along the shoreline of the Chesapeake Bay. They are also a great place to hunt for fossils, but feel free to bring a towel and an umbrella if you just want to enjoy the bay air.
This unassuming little spot houses the wonderfully relaxed Cove Point Winery, famous for the sweet and dessert wines they produce. It’s absolutely worth a stop to while away an afternoon with a glass (or a bottle) of your favorite variety.
Sometimes there’s just no replacement for a trip down to a classic American sports bar. Luckily Lusby is home to Buckets Bar and Grill, an exciting place to visit for live music and some of the best seafood around. This is also a true Washington sports bar, so if you’re longing to catch a Caps game, Buckets is the right place.
Just up the road from Lusby is the extravagant Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center. You can spend some time wandering around and appreciating the unique sculptures in the garden, or check out one of the many exhibitions they have to offer!
Once you’ve taken in all the sights and sounds Lusby has to offer, return to your rental to relax and unwind in the spirit of the silent Chesapeake shore!
If you’re ready to book your trip after reading - and we wouldn’t blame you if you are - head to Vrbo to grab this shoreside cabin while it’s still available.
If you’re feeling the need for more seclusion, Point Cove Lighthouse will let you rent it out so you can get the full lighthouse keeper experience!
