The state of Maryland is home to over 100 lakes, speckled over the landscape from the Allegheny Mountains to the Eastern Shore. It seems that wherever you turn in the Old Line State, you’re sure to happen upon a lakefront where you can toss out a line, push a kayak or canoe into the calming ripples, or just relax with a stroll around the water. Now, none of the lakes we know and love in Maryland today are natural. They were all man-made by damming up rivers, mostly for the purpose of reservoirs. However, this doesn’t make them any less beautiful! Just one stroll around Triadelphia Reservoir in Maryland and you’re sure to see what I mean. Located near Brookeville, this 800-acre Maryland lake is so unbelievably stunning that it looks as if it had been ripped straight out of a painting.
Triadelphia Reservoir was created in 1943 when the Brighton Dam was constructed on the Patuxent River. The reservoir was named after the town of Triadelphia, which was abandoned by 1905 and is currently under the lake.
The resulting lake has a surface area of 800 acres, and it holds over 6 billion gallons of drinking water for residents of Howard and Montgomery Counties! But of course that’s not the only reason this reservoir is so popular.
Triadelphia Reservoir is regularly stocked with fish during the season, so feel free to cast your own line and join in on the famous blue heron’s favorite pastime!
There’s also an eight-mile out-and-back trail that runs alongside the reservoir, perfect for a mid-morning hike on a sunny autumn weekend. The Patuxent River Valley is full of little brooks like this one…
…So bring along your canvas, artist's palette, and your folding chair to take in the sights. Or you could just bring your camera if you, like me, are not quite confident in your brush strokes.
I love canoeing and kayaking out on Maryland lakes, and fortunately, boating is permitted at Triadelphia - with a permit, of course, so be sure to have that done and dusted before you push off.
During the fall the reflection of the autumn foliage sparks in the reservoir like fires in the sky. It’s almost always worth a luxurious stroll around the lakeshore to see. When will you be visiting?
