Road trips allow us to escape the ordinary and explore places we don't normally see. While most people have a bucket list that includes a cross-country road trip, you can actually have quite a few fulfilling road trips right here in Maryland. One of those is simply by driving along Maryland's longest state highway, known as Route 2. Read on to explore just where this stretch of road takes you, and why you should check it out at least once.
Route 2 stretches for 79 miles, starting in Baltimore and ending around Solomons Island. It's the longest state highway, as opposed to I 70, which travels through more than one state.
Or you could always start at the other end, too. Be sure to map out all the places you want to stop along the way, because there are quite a few attractions to see.
The Baltimore portion starts along North Calvert Street. Of course, you can always explore the surrounding areas too, like the museums, delicious local eateries...
...and the harbor. This is a day trip in itself.
As Route 2 continues, it passes the Annapolis area, which should surely be a stop. This historic town is not only Maryland's capital, but it's full of things to do. Check out the US Naval Academy, peruse the local boutiques and restaurants, and take in the water views.
Continue south through Calvert County and you'll pass plenty of natural attractions. After all, the coast is never too far from this road.
A must-see spot is Calvert Cliffs State Park. Hike the 1.8 mile trail to the beautiful cliffs, which are rife with fossils. The Chesapeake Bay isn't a bad sight either.
Towards the end of your journey, route 2 turns into route 4, which will take you to the charming town known as Solomons Island.
This spot is perfect for fishing, boating, or simply taking in the surrounding water views.
Stay until sunset, and you'll be blown away by how gorgeous this spot really is.
Whether you prefer the city or quieter towns, there's no denying just how diverse and rewarding route 2 is. If you've got a Maryland bucket list, and enjoy a scenic ride, consider adding this to your must-do list.
