With its vast history, the Old Line State is bound to have quite a few spooky tales of its own. This one fort in Maryland was the place of many untimely deaths, leading people to believe the unrested souls may have never left. Most people know Fort Mchenry as the birthplace of the National Anthem.
While it played a huge role in the War of 1812, it was also used as a prison for Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. Then in World War I, it became a hospital for the wounded.
Because so many men perished here, Fort McHenry is often said to be haunted by soldiers and prisoners of war.
While touring the grounds, many visitors hear the sounds of heavy footsteps behind them. When they turn around, no one is there.
In fact, all throughout Fort McHenry, people report an unexplainable feeling of being watched.
Spooky happenings vary, from smelling the faint scent of gunpowder in the air...
To spotting full-body apparitions inside the buildings or wandering the grounds.
These ghostly figures are most often reported walking along the edges of the walls, as if still guarding the fort.
Head into the prison, and that's when things get really spooky.
Ghost hunters have recorded violent sounds and words via EVP, coming from inside the cells. It seems that a few disgruntled prisoners never truly left.
A trip into the underground bunker is a fascinating yet eerie experience. Random cold spots linger throughout the room while guests have reported suddenly feeling short of breath.
Of course, these feelings could be associated with being underground or feeling claustrophobic. Or just maybe, it's something more.
