Of all the states known for crystal clear water, Maryland definitely isn't one of them. Our beach waters tend to be murky and our lakes are more brown than blue. However, there is one lake in Maryland that receives compliments for its relatively clear water and sandy bottom. If you're someone who will only swim in water where you can see your surroundings, you may be interested in swimming in the clearest water in Maryland.
Greenbrier State Park is located in Boonsboro. This park offers hiking and camping but is most well-known for the lake.
The white sandy beach leads directly into the 42-acre freshwater lake, which is man made. While the lake is popular with swimmers during the summer, it's also an ideal spot for kayaking and canoeing, and fishing.
Visitors are attracted to the beach and clear water. Most days, you can be standing chest-deep in the lake, look down, and still be able to see your feet. This is a plus for those who fear murky water.
If you want to enjoy the picturesque lake, make sure to arrive early. During the weekend, it's known to get quite crowded.
One day at the beach simply not enough? Good news! Greenbrier State Park boasts 164 campsites, making it easy to turn your day trip into a camping adventure.
