Previously, we featured free places around the Old Line state, including museums, libraries, and more. Today, we're highlighting some of Maryland's free outdoor attractions. You won't find any fees associated with the following spots. Instead, you can expect a day full of fun in the sun without spending a dime.
1. C & O Canal
You can explore the C&O Canal along any part of its 184 miles, stretching from Washington DC to Cumberland. Pack a lunch and spend a day strolling or cycling along the scenic and historic towpath.
2. Brookside Gardens
This spot is one of the most gorgeous gardens in the entire state. The best part is that it's absolutely free. Find it at 1800 Glenallan Ave, Wheaton, MD 20902.
3. Conowingo Dam
What's so exciting about visiting a dam? Well at Conowingo Dam you go for the wildlife. Dozens of hungry bald eagles go fishing at this spot, making for a day to remember. Be sure to bring your camera! Head to 4960 W City Ave, Darlington, MD 21034 to experience this place for yourself.
4. Battle Creek Cypress Swamp
This enchanting spot includes boardwalks that twist and turn through beautiful swampland. Admission is always free and you can experience the beauty year-round. Find it at 2880 Grays Rd, Prince Frederick, MD 20678.
5. Cylburn Arboretum
This hidden gem is located in Baltimore, featuring unique plant life, including Japanese maples. The historic mansion on site is also a stunner. To spend a day here, head to 4915 Greenspring Ave, Baltimore, MD 21209.
6. Salisbury Zoo
Not many people know about Salisbury Zoo, but they should. This zoo has a variety of exotic animals including flamingos, monkeys, reptiles, and more. Admission is free but donations are encouraged. Visit at 755 S Park Dr, Salisbury, MD 21804.
7. Ocean City's Beach
Sure, Ocean City has many attractions that cost money but the beach itself is absolutely free. Bring a lunch and enjoy a day jumping waves in the Atlantic Ocean. A summer must!
8. Sideling Hill
You may have driven through Maryland's most impressive mountain cut but if you've never stopped and taken in the view from the overlook, you're in for a treat. Park at the welcome center and climb the stairs to see miles upon miles of rolling mountains. The sights are especially spectacular during autumn. Find it at I68 West, Mile Marker 74, Hancock, MD 21750.
9. Great Allegheny Passage
You may be surprised to learn that while the C&O Canal ends in Cumberland, the trail actually extends further, all the way to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This route is called the Great Allegheny Passage and it's perfect for cycling. The Maryland portion passes by many railroad tracks, providing neat views of steam engines.
